Highlights

  • The government has raised LPG cylinder prices by Rs 60 effectively.
  • India's reliance on imported LPG prices have led to increased consumer pressure on domestic prices.
  • The government has provided a fact sheet on price increases to ease concerns and clarify the situation.
  • The rise in price has a minimal impact on PMUY families, resulting in a daily increase in cooking expenses of Rs 0.10 per household.

The government has announced an immediate increase of Rs 60 on domestic LPG cylinder prices, sparking a heated debate on consumer affordability and the government's decision-making process. The opposition has expressed disapproval of the decision. However, a fact sheet released by the government has addressed these concerns by providing context and clarifying the situation.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum, India’s reliance on imported LPG has played a significant role in domestic price fluctuations. The government highlights the rise in the Saudi Contract Price (CP) from $415 to $712 per metric ton over a two-year period. Despite the increase, the cost of a 14.2 kg non-subsidiary LPG cylinder in Delhi remains at Rs 853, a reduction of Rs 134 from the current market price.

Additionally, the government has taken measures to cushion the impact, covering additional expenses for non-subsidized cylinders in Delhi where the price gap is Rs 134. The rise in LPG prices affects PMUY families, with daily cooking expenses increasing from Rs 7.31 to Rs 8.11, corresponding to an impact on Rs 13 per household.

Despite the increase, India's LPG prices remain far more affordable compared to neighboring countries, with India’s LPG prices being the lowest among its neighbors. The government aims to mitigate the impact of imported prices with protective measures and support initiatives, such as the PMUY scheme. These initiatives have led to an increase in LPG consumption and efficiency.
