Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has announced the detailed plans for the fifth edition of the Andhra Premier League (APL), set to take place from June 9 to June 30 in three cities across Andhra Pradesh. This season aims to provide a major platform for emerging local talent and continue nurturing cricket skills among young players, says ACA president Kesineni Shivanath.
Decentralized Cricket Development: A New Chapter
In a strategic move from previous years, the APL-2026 will now be played in Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri. Each city will host matches for different phases of the tournament, ensuring a more equitable spread of cricket culture throughout Andhra Pradesh.
The ACA president emphasized that the league is crucial not only for talent development but also for promoting youth engagement in sports, highlighting the recent inclusion of Guntur-based cricketer Rashid in the India-A team as evidence of the state's growing cricketing strength. Matches will be free for school students, and educational institutions are encouraged to facilitate student attendance to maximize their experience.
"APL serves as more than just a cricket tournament; it acts as a platform that recognizes state talent and sets up solid foundations for Andhra Pradesh's sporting future,"
Shivanath added.Entertainment and Cultural Richness
To enhance the fan experience, APL-2026 will feature traditional performances like Tholu Bommalata and Kolatam. Additionally, entertainment programs from film and music industries will engage audiences across the state.
The matches are set to be broadcast live on Jio Star Sports, allowing cricket enthusiasts around the world to share in the excitement. Andhra Pradesh's rich cultural tapestry will also come to play, with awareness campaigns planned through flash mobs in Visakhapatnam.
Efforts are underway to develop Mangalagiri into a major cricket hub, ensuring that matches are staged under international-standard conditions with modern facilities and floodlit venues. These developments are expected to establish the city as a key venue for future sporting events.
