The YSRC NTR district doctors’ wing has officially called for a comprehensive investigation into alleged administrative and procedural irregularities at King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam. This formal request highlights growing concerns regarding the welfare and treatment of medical trainees within the institution, prompting calls for immediate corrective measures.
A representative delegation, led by the chairman of the YSRC NTR district doctors’ wing, Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav, met with the Director of Medical Education (DME), Dr. Vishnu Vardan, in Vijayawada. During this meeting, they submitted a detailed memorandum outlining various grievances specifically focused on the department of general surgery at KGH.
Allegations of Exploitation and Malpractice
The documentation presented to the DME includes serious allegations concerning the treatment of postgraduate medical students. According to the representation, these trainees have reportedly been subjected to financial exploitation, with claims suggesting that payments were being linked to attendance records and examination results. Such practices, if verified, would constitute a severe violation of professional and academic ethics.
Furthermore, the memorandum highlighted concerns regarding the conduct of leadership at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS). Specifically, it referenced an audio clip allegedly featuring VIMS director Dr. Manmadhara Rao, who is accused of using inappropriate and offensive language toward staff members and female doctors. These claims have added a layer of urgency to the demand for a transparent inquiry.
Workload and Regulatory Compliance
The delegation also raised significant concerns regarding potential violations of guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The group alleges that postgraduate trainees are frequently required to work continuous shifts lasting up to 32 hours, significantly exceeding the standard working hours recommended by the commission, which stipulate a limit of 74 hours per week.
To address these systemic issues, the YSRC NTR district doctors’ wing has urged the Director of Medical Education to implement the recommendations of the NMC Task Force immediately. Their proposals include the strict enforcement of regulated duty hours, the provision of mandatory rest periods, the establishment of effective grievance redressal mechanisms, and the protection of trainees against all forms of academic and financial exploitation.
Following the meeting, Dr. Vishnu Vardan assured the delegation that the complaints and allegations outlined in the representation would be prioritized for investigation. He committed to ensuring that the matters are examined thoroughly and that appropriate administrative action is taken based on the findings to safeguard the professional environment for medical personnel.
