Kolkata: The Trinamul Congress (TMC) faces a significant political upheaval as its elected representatives, ranging from Members of Parliament (MPs) to Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), prepare to switch allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Post-election chaos has seen four-time MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attend an administrative meeting with six additional TMC MLAs following a BJP invitation. Ghosh Dastidar's defection follows her removal as party chief whip in Lok Sabha and organizational district president, marking a pivotal moment for the TMC.
Doubts about further defections loom large, as the six accompanying MLAs from North 24 Parganas, namely Anisur Rahman Bidesh (Deganga), Burhanul Mukaddim (Baduria), Bina Mondal (Swarupnagar), Surajit Mitra (Basirhat South), Usharani Mondal (Minakhan), and Abdul Mateen (Haroa), hinted their attendance was purely for administration. TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, another heavyweight, also weighed in with a cryptic post on social media, referencing ancient Roman history to criticize his party's recent downfall.
In yet another unsettling sign for the TMC ahead of upcoming municipal polls, 115 councillors across seven civic bodies have resigned within three weeks. This mass defection adds to concerns about the TMC's future in West Bengal politics.
Political Shift and Impact
The switch of such significant figures underlines the shifting political landscape in North India's third-largest state. BJP's strategic move, likely aimed at destabilizing the opposition and consolidating its position, has ignited speculation on potential long-term consequences for TMC governance.
These defections come hot on the heels of a resounding defeat in the West Bengal Assembly election. With multiple MLAs and even a key MP moving to the BJP fold, there is palpable anxiety among party ranks about maintaining their base or navigating through this unpredictable phase with minimal loss.
