Walton Goggins Hailed a Hero After Saving Olivia Wilde on Film Set

Actor Olivia Wilde recently shared a harrowing behind-the-scenes story from the production of the 2011 sci-fi Western film, Cowboys & Aliens. During a recent interview, she credited her co-star Walton Goggins with saving her life after she suffered a dangerous fall from a horse during a high-speed filming sequence.

The incident occurred while Wilde was galloping through the desert alongside major stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. According to her account, the group was riding at a full sprint with approximately 40 horses trailing them when her mount unexpectedly jumped over a large ditch, causing her to be thrown from the saddle. Wilde landed on the ground, hidden from the view of the riders behind her by a ridge of dirt and thick clouds of dust.

Walton Goggins' Heroic Intervention

Recalling the terrifying moments, Wilde described hearing the thunderous sound of dozens of horses rapidly approaching her position. Fearing the worst as she lay helpless in the path of the stampede, she believed she would be seriously injured. However, Walton Goggins, who was riding behind her, reacted instantaneously to the dangerous situation.

Goggins, a highly skilled equestrian, maneuvered his horse sideways directly in front of Wilde to create a physical shield. This daring move forced the oncoming horses to split into two groups, effectively protecting Wilde from being trampled. Bystanders initially thought Goggins had lost control, but it quickly became clear that his split-second decision was a calculated move to ensure her safety.

Wilde expressed deep gratitude for her co-star's quick thinking, referring to him as a "real-life hero." She emphasized that she owes him her life for his intervention during the chaotic shoot. Despite the intensity of this accident, she reflected fondly on the overall experience of making Cowboys & Aliens, noting that working with such a talented cast, including Sam Rockwell, remained one of her most memorable professional experiences.

The film, directed by Jon Favreau, was released in 2011 and featured a star-studded ensemble cast. While the production faced challenges, the bond forged between actors during demanding scenes such as the one Wilde described highlights the often-dangerous nature of filming action-heavy sequences on location.
