Following alerts from the Union Health Ministry, Visakhapatnam has intensified its surveillance mechanisms in a bid to prevent any potential Ebola virus cases. District Medical and Health Officer Dr P. Jagadeeswara Rao has announced that local authorities have ramped up measures at key entry points including the airport, seaport, and major universities. The 30-bed isolation ward prepared at the Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases is now operational to handle suspected cases.

Enhanced Screening Protocols at Key Entry Points

At the Visakhapatnam International Airport, passengers arriving from international flights are subjected to rigorous health checks immediately upon landing. This collaboration with the Airports Authority of India ensures a multi-agency approach, involving Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), airport health organizations, immigration and customs officials, and airline representatives.

Students from Ebola-affected countries like Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan have been identified by the district administration. Although many have returned to their home countries for vacations, the need for heightened vigilance persists due to ongoing transmission risks.

The symptoms associated with Ebola virus disease typically begin suddenly, with an acute fever, chills, severe body pain, fatigue, sore throat, and headache. If not detected and treated early, this can rapidly deteriorate into more serious conditions. Screening protocols are now in place at the airport to ensure timely identification and management of any suspected cases.
