The Union ministry of tourism has officially selected the historic Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, located in Narasimhakonda, for development under the esteemed PRASHAD scheme. This announcement marks a significant development for religious tourism in the SPSR Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, promising a comprehensive upgrade to the sacred site.
The PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme initiative is designed to revitalize major pilgrimage sites across the country. By focusing on enhancing infrastructure, the project aims to improve overall visitor amenities while meticulously preserving the deep spiritual and cultural significance of these heritage locations. As part of this identification, Narasimhakonda stands out as the sole site selected from Andhra Pradesh among the 16 newly identified heritage and pilgrimage centers across India.
Enhancing Spiritual Tourism Infrastructure
Following an official memorandum issued on June 8 by Lalithambigai K., the deputy secretary of the Union ministry of tourism, state governments were invited to submit detailed project reports (DPRs) for the selected destinations. The primary goal of the PRASHAD scheme funding is to upgrade essential facilities, which may include the construction of better roads, enhanced pilgrim facilities, improved sanitation, modern illumination, landscaping, and the development of dedicated interpretation centers. These improvements are intended to provide a more comfortable and enriched experience for the thousands of devotees who visit the Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple annually, particularly during high-traffic events such as the annual Brahmotsavams.
State authorities have been tasked with submitting their comprehensive project proposals through the programme management information system (PMIS) portal by the deadline of June 20. Upon approval, these proposed development projects will become eligible for significant Central assistance under the PRASHAD scheme. This move is widely expected to transform the site into a premier spiritual tourism destination while safeguarding its ancient heritage.
Local representatives, including Nellore Rural constituency legislator Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, along with key stakeholders in the religious tourism sector and the local devotee community, have expressed their strong support for this initiative. There is a collective sense of optimism that the successful implementation of the PRASHAD scheme at the Vedagiri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple will provide the necessary impetus to modernize local tourism infrastructure while respecting the temple's historical and religious legacy.
