A high-level United States delegation, led by Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch, is scheduled to visit India from June 1st to the 4th of June, 2026. The purpose of this four-day visit is to finalize details on an interim trade pact and continue negotiations under the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) framework.

During the meeting, the U.S. delegation will engage with India's chief negotiators, including Additional Secretary Darpan Jain from the Department of Commerce. The discussions are expected to cover market access, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, investment promotion, and economic security alignment.

Progress in Negotiations

The current round of talks follows earlier meetings held in Washington, DC from April 20th to 23rd when an Indian delegation met U.S. counterparts. Both countries had agreed to pursue an interim trade agreement that would align with mutual benefits and support broader negotiations for a comprehensive BTA.

Under the current framework, India has offered to reduce tariffs on several US goods such as industrial products, agricultural items like dried distillers' grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine, and spirits. These steps are seen as a critical move towards fostering stronger economic ties.

Speaking at the US-India TRUST Initiative event at IIT Delhi, U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor highlighted that bilateral trade has significantly increased from USD 20 billion to over USD 220 billion in just two decades. India is considered a key strategic partner for the United States, owing to its growing economic and geopolitical importance.
