A United Airlines flight from Newark Liberty International Airport en route to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, had an unexpected detour mid-flight on Saturday due to a possible security concern. The Boeing 767, with 190 passengers and 12 crew members on board, turned around shortly after takeoff and landed back at Newark. After a thorough investigation by Port Authority police, the aircraft was rescreened before taking off again early Sunday morning.
According to air traffic control audio, the security team initially discovered that someone had named their Bluetooth device with a contentious term. Crew members reportedly asked passengers multiple times to turn off all Bluetooth devices but found two that remained active. This led to the flight's decision to return to Newark for inspection and additional checks. The airline did not disclose further details surrounding the incident.
Security Measures Undermined
The diverted flight faced several safety protocols, including an evacuation of passengers by Port Authority police. Once the aircraft was deemed safe, passengers had to go through a screening process by TSA and Customs and Border Patrol before reboarding the replacement aircraft, which landed in Palma de Mallorca later that day.
Recent occurrences with United Airlines indicate heightened security measures at play. On Friday, an unruly passenger diverted a domestic flight due to security concerns, while earlier this month another United flight struck a truck and light pole upon landing but reported no injuries. These incidents underscore the airline's commitment to ensuring safety and adherence to rigorous protocols.
