A significant two-day round-table event was held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Amritapuri, Kerala. The meeting brought together over 22 representatives from UNESCO Chairholders and academic leaders across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to strategize on aligning ongoing research with UNESCO's pivotal goals for the coming years.
The discussions centered around critical issues like the triple planetary crisis—climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution—as well as the transformative impacts of digital technology, ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI), gender equality, and youth engagement. These topics were identified by UNESCO as key areas needing urgent attention to achieve global sustainability.
Leadership Presence
Notable participants included Tim Curtis from UNESCO's Regional Office for South Asia, Susan Vize representing Bangladesh, and Jaco du Toit for Nepal. The visiting delegation also met with the university's Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.
Curtis emphasized the importance of UNESCO Chairs in contributing to policy-level conversations at both regional and international levels. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham currently hosts three such chairs focused on gender equality and women's empowerment, sustainable innovation through experiential learning, and promoting assistive technologies in education.
UNESCO Chairs are formal collaborations between higher educational institutions and UNESCO, with a mission to conduct research, training, and knowledge-sharing in vital areas like education, science, culture, and communication. These partnerships aim to foster meaningful dialogues for the betterment of societal issues at large.
