Uddhav Thackeray Dismisses Allegations of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress Party Merger

Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has officially refuted allegations made by a group of rebel Members of Parliament regarding a potential merger with the Congress party. During a significant event held in Mumbai to commemorate the 60th foundation day of the Shiv Sena, Thackeray emphasized that his party’s core identity is fundamentally rooted in safeguarding the interests of the Marathi people and upholding Hindutva values, rather than seeking political consolidation with other entities.

Addressing Political Allegations and Party Integrity

The controversy stems from claims made by six rebel MPs who suggested that there were internal apprehensions about a possible alliance or merger between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress. Addressing his supporters, Uddhav Thackeray dismissed these claims as baseless, asserting that the party was never established to merge with any external political organization. He pointedly referenced his past relationship with the BJP, noting that even during a thirty-year alliance, the party maintained its distinct identity, making the suggestion of a Congress merger entirely illogical.

Furthermore, Thackeray levied sharp criticism against the BJP, alleging that their ongoing strategy of engineering defections within other parties poses a dangerous threat to the fabric of Indian democracy. He expressed concern that the current political climate is drifting toward a system where competitive elections are compromised, labeling the tactic of forced defections as detrimental to the public's trust in democratic processes. The former Chief Minister also questioned the legitimacy of the recent political maneuvers, suggesting that the Maharashtra BJP might be the entity actually aligning with the Shinde Sena faction.

Tensions Within the Parliamentary Ranks

The backdrop to these comments involves a notable internal rift, as six of the nine Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MPs deliberately chose to skip a critical parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi. The MPs identified in this defiance include Nagesh Aashtikar, Sanjay Jadhav, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Dina Patil, Omprakash Rajenimbalkar, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure. Thackeray publicly expressed regret to the electorate for having supported these candidates, who appear to be preparing to exit the party.

Responding to criticisms regarding his leadership style and supposed lack of engagement, Thackeray defended his commitment to the party base. He highlighted that he conducted extensive meetings across every constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to ensure direct contact with both party workers and voters. He reiterated that the success of these elected representatives was primarily built upon the foundational faith held by Shiv Sainiks and the general public, rather than individual merit alone.
