The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing significant internal turmoil as two prominent leaders have officially resigned from their party positions. This development comes as a fresh challenge for TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, compounding the difficulties already plaguing the political organization.
Internal Friction and Formal Resignations
The departure of Jyotipriyo Mullick and Goutam Deb marks a notable shift within the party hierarchy. Both individuals had been recently appointed to the national executive committee only two weeks prior to their exit. Following their defeat in the latest Assembly elections, both leaders chose to step away from their roles and, more broadly, announced their complete withdrawal from active politics. Jyotipriyo Mullick formally submitted his resignation citing severe health concerns, explicitly noting issues with his blood sugar levels and kidney function. He indicated that medical professionals have advised him to prioritize rest to manage his ongoing physical and mental strain.
Similarly, Goutam Deb relinquished his responsibilities as the Mayor of Siliguri. Reflecting on his career, he remarked that his five-decade journey in public service has been marked by numerous experiences, and he expressed gratitude to the residents of Siliguri for the opportunity to serve them. He emphasized that while he has stepped down, multiple welfare initiatives remain in progress for the local population.
Allegations and Legal Scrutiny
Beyond these resignations, the party is grappling with serious legal accusations. On Thursday, ten rebel TMC MLAs formally approached the cyber crime cell of the Bidhannagar City Police. They have requested an official investigation into the financial activities linked to the party’s bank accounts.
Ritabrata Banerjee, serving as the Leader of the Opposition, has publicly questioned the transparency of the party's finances. He emphasized that the primary objective of this complaint is to determine whether any illicit funds—specifically mentioning proceeds from "cut-money," theft, or dacoity—were channeled into the organization's accounts. This formal request for a probe into the TMC party finances signifies a growing legal and political standoff that continues to unfold in Kolkata.
