Travellers get relief as Indian Railways Revises Counter Ticket Cancellation Rules
Indian Railways has introduced significant changes in their ticket cancellation policies, effective from April 1, 2026, including simplified counter cancellations, easier e-ticket refunds, enhanced Tatkal booking security measures, and more flexible travel class upgrades. These updates aim to streamline the reservation process and improve overall passenger convenience.

Highlights
- •- Passengers can now cancel tickets at any station
- •- New refund policies based on cancellation time
- •- Elimination of TDR requirement for e-tickets
- •- Implementation of new security measures in Tatkal booking system
Indian Railways has introduced several changes to its ticket cancellation policies, providing much-needed relief to travelers. These updates will come into effect from April 1, 2026, and aim to simplify and streamline the process for those frequently changing their travel plans.
Counter Cancellation Now More Flexible
The Railways has made the ticket cancellation process more convenient by allowing passengers to cancel at any station, not just the originating one. Previously, this was a cumbersome requirement that often led to additional travel hassles for last-minute cancellations.
Under the new rules, if you need to cancel your ticket between 24 and 72 hours before your journey, you can expect a partial refund: 25% of the fare. Cancellations within 72 hours will yield around 75% of the total ticket cost, provided there is a minimum cancellation charge.
However, for those making changes less than 8 hours before departure, refunds are no longer possible, thus deterring last-minute cancellations and ensuring better utilization of train resources. This new framework seeks to balance traveler convenience with rail operational efficiency.
No TDR Required for E-Tickets
The new policy also streamlines the process for e-tickets by eliminating the need for a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR). Passengers no longer have to apply separately, ensuring more seamless and hassle-free transactions during these critical last-minute changes.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, significant measures are also being taken to prevent irregularities in Tatkal bookings. The implementation of an Aadhaar-based OTP system ensures that only genuine users can book tickets within the first 30 minutes. Additionally, a robust anti-bot mechanism will further secure bookings against fraudulent activities.
The Railways has detected and blocked over 30 million suspicious user IDs for these very reasons, indicating a step up in vigilance to maintain the integrity of the reservation system.
Upgrades & Changes Made Easier
The revised chart preparation times are another positive move. Passengers will now have more planning flexibility with charts prepared 9 to 18 hours in advance, rather than just 4 as before. Moreover, the ability to upgrade or change boarding station up to 30 minutes prior to departure provides much-needed convenience and better adaptability.
These changes are set to be implemented on a phased basis between April 1 and April 15, 2026. They promise to alleviate many common travel hassles, making the rail journey more seamless and user-friendly for millions of travelers in India.
