The state government is set to initiate a significant project focused on Buddhist sites conservation in the Suryapet district of Telangana. This preservation effort will target the ancient archaeological locations of Phanigiri and Gajulabanda, with a formal foundation stone ceremony scheduled for June 22.
The upcoming restoration initiative will be inaugurated by the Minister for Culture, Jupally Krishna Rao. Financial support for these critical preservation tasks is being sourced through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds provided by the TG Genco facility at the Yadadri thermal power station. Specifically, the project has earmarked 1.6 crore rupees for the extensive development of Phanigiri, while 23 lakh rupees has been allocated for the protection and restoration of Gajulabanda.

Phanigiri stands as a pivotal historical landmark, representing both the Hinayana and Mahayana schools of thought in Buddhism. The site has gained immense recognition due to numerous excavations conducted since the Nizam era, which have consistently revealed deep cultural layers. The location features an array of architectural and artistic marvels, including a massive maha stupa, various monastic complexes, and intricate chaitya halls. Furthermore, the site has provided historians with invaluable stone panels and ancient inscriptions written in Brahmi script.
Beyond the structural remains, the area is rich in small artifacts that offer a glimpse into daily life during the Satavahana and Ikshvaku periods. Excavated items include diverse pottery fragments, terracotta objects, lime-based artifacts, and various beads. Perhaps most notably, archaeologists have discovered historical coins, including a specific Roman coin that has been linked to the era of the Emperor Augustus, highlighting the region's ancient trade connections and prosperity.
