The state government of Telangana has officially initiated the land acquisition process for the construction of the Lakshmidevipally reservoir. Following recent administrative directives, authorities have begun moving forward to secure 2,919 acres of land required for this significant infrastructure project. This balancing reservoir serves as a critical element of the larger Palamur-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme, with the site spanning across both Vikarabad and Rangareddy districts.
Project Scope and Irrigation Impact
The Lakshmidevipally reservoir is designed with a storage capacity of 2.8 tmc ft, which is notably larger than the volume held by the prominent Hussainsagar. Upon completion, the facility is projected to deliver essential irrigation water to nearly four lakh acres of farmland spread across various regions, including Parigi, Shadnagar, Vikarabad, and Chevella. Beyond supporting agricultural productivity, the project aims to stabilize and improve the regional drinking water supply for local communities.
Legislators, including Parigi MLA T. Rammohan Reddy and Shadnagar MLA Veerlapally Shankar, recently conducted on-site inspections of the proposed reservoir area. Their visit focused on reviewing the progress of land acquisition, surveying the terrain, and evaluating construction readiness. It has been reported that approximately Rs 600 crore will be allocated specifically for land acquisition purposes, while the overall financial outlay for the entire project is estimated to reach Rs 10,000 crore.
Strategic Regional Development
The technical scope of the project highlights its widespread benefits. The reservoir is expected to irrigate 61,824 acres in Shadnagar, 1,24,713 acres in Chevella, 80,000 acres in Parigi, 90,000 acres in Tandur, and 80,000 acres in Vikarabad. Additionally, the project will serve 24,112 acres in Jadcherla, 69,000 acres in Ibrahimpatnam, 39,000 acres in Maheshwaram, and 9,000 acres in Rajendranagar.
Following the formal commitment made by the Chief Minister on February 7, official acquisition orders have been finalized. The district collectors of Rangareddy and Vikarabad have been instructed to prioritize the commencement of the acquisition process. Local representatives have emphasized that this infrastructure will play a pivotal role in boosting agricultural output, replenishing groundwater levels, and addressing long-term drinking water scarcity. Furthermore, the broader governmental strategy involves integrating Godavari and Krishna river waters to create a confluence that will provide sustainable water security for future generations.
