Telangana is embarking on an ambitious initiative to elevate its regional landmarks into global tourism hubs. This strategic move, discussed recently in Hyderabad during a state-level consultative workshop, aims to position the state as a premier destination for international travelers. The project aligns with a central government proposal that offers significant financial support of up to ₹500 crore per location to enhance visitor experiences.

Driving Tourism Growth with Strategic Investment

The state-level workshop held on Wednesday was chaired by A. Vani Prasad, the Special Chief Secretary. The meeting gathered a diverse group of key stakeholders, including officials from heritage and tourism departments, the Telangana Tourism Development Corporation, urban development agencies, district administrators, and industry experts. The primary objective of the session was to identify high-potential sites capable of being transformed into top-tier destinations that meet rigorous international standards.

Central to the development plan are core improvements focused on enhancing the overall tourist experience. Key areas of intervention include building seamless connectivity, upgrading infrastructure, and ensuring high levels of cleanliness, safety, and accessibility. Furthermore, the initiative places a heavy emphasis on robust destination branding to ensure these sites gain visibility in the highly competitive global tourism market.

This plan follows the official announcement made during the Union Budget 2025-26, which introduced a challenge-based approach to foster the development of world-class tourist destinations. By partnering with state governments, the Union Ministry aims to drive sustainable growth. A core component of this framework is the implementation of a performance-linked incentive (PLI) system, which will encourage stakeholders to adopt sustainable tourism practices and optimize destination management.

Sustainable Management and Private Sector Participation

A transformative aspect of this proposal is the creation of dedicated destination management organisations (DMOs). These entities are expected to play a pivotal role in the professional planning, aggressive marketing, and long-term upkeep of these tourist sites. The initiative also aims to significantly increase private-sector participation, inviting investors and industry experts to contribute to the strategic growth and maintenance of these hubs.

The insights and recommendations gathered during the consultative workshop in Hyderabad are currently being consolidated by the state government. These proposals will be finalized and presented at the upcoming National Summit on Developing Global Standard Tourist Destinations, which is slated for July. This summit will provide a platform for states to showcase their vision for creating world-class infrastructure and advancing the national tourism landscape through these new hubs.
