The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new initiative to provide 1-gram gold rings to newborns delivered in government healthcare facilities. Officially titled the 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam', this program is designed to celebrate the arrival of children and honor mothers, symbolizing the cultural practice where a maternal uncle gifts the newborn.
Implementing the Gold Ring Scheme for Newborns
To ensure effective execution, the state is establishing a dedicated administrative body known as a state project/programme management unit. This agency will be responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and overall management of the distribution process. The 1-gram gold ring for newborns is currently valued at approximately Rs 13,600 per unit, with the government allocating an annual budget of Rs 755.83 crore for this welfare measure.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is scheduled to officially launch this program on September 15, which coincides with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai. However, the policy will have a retrospective effect, applying to children born from June 22 onwards, commemorating the birthday of the Chief Minister. This initiative aims to enhance public health delivery and foster lasting institutional goodwill across the state.
Eligibility and Operational Details
The state government has emphasized that this initiative reflects its commitment to maternal and child healthcare. By providing such tokens in government institutions, the administration aims to encourage institutional births and ensure equitable access to quality medical services. According to recent reports, government facilities record approximately 4.2 lakh deliveries annually, representing over 50 percent of the total births in Tamil Nadu.
The scheme is available to all eligible residents of the state who deliver at government-run hospitals. To avail of the benefit, mothers must provide valid residential documentation, such as a ration card, voter identity card, Aadhaar, or other authorized proofs of nativity. The distribution is inclusive, covering newborns regardless of birth order or gender, thereby eliminating any form of discrimination. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) has been tasked with the procurement and supply of the gold rings, based on requirements submitted by the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
