Tamil Nadu Cinemas Get a Boost: CM Vijay Allows Five Shows Per Day

Highlights

  • CM Vijay approves five daily showings from the release date to boost visibility and economic growth
  • Amendments made to 1957 regulations streamline operations for theatres across Tamil Nadu
  • No need for separate permission on public holidays and weekends
  • Policy change supports local film industry and enhances audience viewing experience

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, S. Joseph Vijay, has issued a significant order, boosting the film industry by allowing theatres across the state to screen five shows per day from the release date of new Tamil films for seven days.

Regulations and Impact

According to the statement released on X, CM Vijay approved amendments to the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957. This change aims to enhance the visibility of new films and provide more screen time for theatres. Previously, theatres were limited to four shows per day under Rule 14-A of the 'C' Form licence conditions.

The order includes an additional special provision on local festival days or public holidays, permitting a fifth show if needed by the licensing authority/District Collector in districts and the Commissioner of Police in Chennai city. The key change now allows screenings for seven days from the release date, aligning with the current demands of the film industry.

Significantly, theatres will no longer require separate permission to screen five shows per day during the initial seven days post-release or on local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This step aims to streamline operations and boost the film viewing experience for audiences.

Bolstering Film Industry Growth

This decision by CM Vijay comes after the industry representatives met with him in early May 2026. The representatives emphasized the need for better visibility of new films, which this change now addresses effectively. Earlier, Vijay had congratulated the team behind the hit film 'Karuppu', further highlighting his support for cinema in Tamil Nadu.

The policy modification reflects a strategic move to foster growth within the film industry while catering to growing audience demand. The measure is likely to have far-reaching benefits, enhancing both the economic and cultural landscape of Tamil Nadu's vibrant film sector.
