Authorities in Madhya Pradesh are gearing up for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028, an event expected to draw a massive turnout of 40 crore devotees to Ujjain. To accommodate this significant spiritual pilgrimage, the state government is investing 25,000 crore rupees into comprehensive infrastructure development.
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which is held once every 12 years in the city famously home to the Mahakaleshwar temple, serves as a major landmark for Hindu worshippers. Scheduled to take place from March 27 to May 27, 2028, on the banks of the sacred Shipra River, the event requires extensive logistical preparations to ensure both safety and convenience for millions of visitors.
Advanced Infrastructure for Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently emphasized that the primary resolution for the event centers on the vision of a "Clean Simhastha, Healthy Simhastha." During a training workshop in Ujjain, the Chief Minister highlighted the critical need for sophisticated crowd management, emergency services, and rapid response systems to handle the influx of four crore visitors expected during the peak period of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
The massive 25,000 crore budget is being utilized across various sectors, including the development of new ghats spanning 29 kilometers along the Shipra River at a cost of 778 crore rupees. Furthermore, existing permanent ghats covering 7.8 kilometers are currently undergoing upgrades valued at 120 crore rupees. These enhancements aim to ensure that millions of devotees can successfully participate in the ritual holy dip within a 24-hour timeframe.
Connectivity is also a major focus, with the Ujjain-Indore six-lane highway project, valued at approximately 1,692 crore rupees, nearing its final stages of completion. To further streamline the movement of pilgrims throughout the fair area, authorities are constructing 22 new bridges while simultaneously widening existing structures, an initiative costing over 853 crore rupees.
A significant technological addition to the event is the establishment of a Central Digital Command Centre. With an investment of 139 crore rupees, this facility will utilize integrated CCTV surveillance, AI-driven crowd control, and advanced traffic regulation systems. By prioritizing these structural and digital upgrades, the government aims to facilitate seamless travel and safety for pilgrims arriving from across India and around the globe for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
