Income Tax: In a significant move towards tax relief and fairness, Raghav Chadha, the spokesperson for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has suggested introducing joint income tax returns (ITR) for married couples in India. This proposal aims to address the financial disparities within households where one partner earns significantly more than the other.

Raghav Chadha, a member of the Rajya Sabha and a chartered accountant, highlighted that under current rules, only individual incomes are taxed, leading to many families with differing income levels being burdened by higher tax rates. He pointed out that household expenses such as food, housing, medical care, and more are often shared, yet these financial responsibilities do not correspondingly merge into a single entity for tax purposes.

Chadha emphasized that in contrast to several other countries including France, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom where married couples can file their income taxes jointly, India has been treating it as two separate entities. This results in significantly higher tax liabilities for families with differing earnings streams. For instance, he gave an example: A household comprising two individuals earning Rs 10 lakh each would have no tax liability under this system compared to a second scenario where one partner earns Rs 20 lakh and the other stays home to care for their child, resulting in a tax burden of Rs 1.92 lakh.

To address these issues, Chadha proposed establishing a joint income tax filing mechanism which not only brings fairness but also offers advantages such as consolidated family income and tax rebates. The AAP MP aims to implement this proposal as a step towards ensuring financial security for families with single earners or those where both parties contribute financially.

Chadha’s initiative seeks to empower married couples by providing them with more equitable tax treatment, thereby alleviating their overall financial burden without the need for a marriage, if desired. Moreover, it aligns well with international practices and aims at closing the gaps between domestic norms and global standards in income taxation.
