Controversy surrounds the proposed Bidadi Township Project in the Bengaluru South district, as local farmers continue to express strong opposition to the initiative. The project, which seeks to acquire 7,481 acres of fertile land, has become a focal point of intense political debate. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently stated that the development has received explicit support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who purportedly views the township as a necessary measure to alleviate urbanization pressures on Bengaluru.
Political Clash Over Bidadi Development
Following a recent visit to New Delhi, D.K. Shivakumar claimed that he discussed the Bidadi Township Project with the Prime Minister. According to the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi commended the proposal, citing his own experience in overseeing the construction of eight similar townships and encouraging the state government to proceed. However, this assertion has drawn immediate and sharp criticism from political opponents.
Union Minister of Large-Scale Industries and state Janata Dal Secular (JDS) president H.D. Kumaraswamy has publicly urged the Chief Minister to refrain from invoking the Prime Minister’s name in connection with the project. H.D. Kumaraswamy has firmly characterized the Bidadi Township Project as a major land scam. He warned the state administration against utilizing the influence of the Prime Minister’s Office to justify what he describes as an opaque real estate venture.
Environmental and Economic Concerns
The opposition to the project extends beyond political disagreement, centering on significant environmental and agricultural implications. H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasized a commitment to prioritize environmental preservation, specifically noting that the project would require the felling of approximately 10 lakh trees. Critics argue that the destruction of such a large area of fertile land would have devastating consequences for the local economy.
The regional dairy sector is also at risk, as the area currently accounts for a production of 6 lakh liters of milk per day. Opponents of the Bidadi Township Project maintain that industrializing this agricultural belt will severely disrupt established dairy activities and the livelihoods of local farmers. As the debate intensifies, stakeholders on both sides of the issue continue to highlight the conflicting priorities of urban expansion versus environmental and agricultural sustainability.
