Starting in April 2026, significant updates to PAN Card rules go into effect. The new criteria include reduced documentation needs and benefits for financial transactions up to Rs 1 lakh and property purchases under Rs 5 lakh, though name discrepancies may lead to complications.

Highlights
- •- New rules apply from April 1, 2026
- •- Reduced need for PAN details for transactions up to RS 1 Lakh
- •- Name on Pan Card must match Aadhaar card or risk issues
- •- New forms required for PAN acquisitions and updates
Starting April 2026, significant changes to Pan Card rules will affect millions of Indian citizens. Notably, the Pan Card has become even more essential for financial transactions and property deals in personal finance as well as business processes.
New PAN Card Benefits and Requirements
The updated rules under what is known as PAN 2.0 include important benefits and new requirements for cardholders. For example, starting April 1, individuals will no longer need to provide their Pan details if they withdraw or deposit up to Rs 10 lakh annually at a bank or post office. Similarly, there's no Pan required for hotel, restaurant, or event expenses up to Rs 1 lakh, and no need for it when purchasing a Bike or Car worth up to Rs 5 lakh. Transactions under Rs 20 lakh for property will also be exempt from this requirement.
However, these benefits come with specific caveats; notably, your name on the Pan Card must match that of your Aadhaar card. Any discrepancies could lead to your Pan becoming inactive and complicate claims and tax matters. Additionally, a higher tax deduction at source (TDS) may apply if such issues are not resolved promptly.
To ensure smooth transactions, it is advised to verify that the name on both documents aligns with accurate information. Furthermore, from April 1, more detailed documents will be required for Pan Card acquisition and updates. These include voter ID card, birth certificate, driving license, passport, or even a high school mark sheet.
The old Pan card forms will stop being used as of April 1, introducing entirely new ones to streamline the process.
