The Odisha Police have officially transferred the investigation concerning a recent mob assault in Rayagada district to the Integrated Unit for Crime Against Women (IUCAW). This decision follows a violent incident involving a young woman and her male companion, with authorities emphasizing that the case is being treated with the utmost seriousness to ensure a comprehensive and swift resolution.
Additional Director General of Police, S. Shyni, who oversees the Crime Against Women and Children Wing, confirmed that the investigation has been designated as a "Red Flag" case. This classification ensures that the inquiry will receive direct oversight from the specialized unit to maintain transparency and efficiency throughout the legal process. The IUCAW has already provided initial directives to the investigating officers to streamline the collection of evidence and the identification of all participants.

The alarming event occurred on June 16, when two individuals traveling by scooter from Daringbadi to Kalahandi inadvertently lost their way. Upon entering Intaliguda village in Rayagada, baseless rumors regarding child kidnapping began to circulate rapidly. This misinformation incited a crowd to pursue the pair. The victims' scooter skidded during the chase, leading to a physical assault by the mob. They were subsequently rescued by helpful local residents and required medical attention at a community health center before being transferred to the district headquarters hospital for further care.
Authorities have taken decisive action in the wake of this Rayagada mob assault. To date, 23 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. The Odisha Police, working in coordination with the state Crime Branch, have registered three separate cases to address the incident.
