The iconic British motorcycle brand Norton Motorcycles, currently under the ownership of TVS Motor Company, is set to make a significant impact in the global market. The company has officially commenced the local production of its highly anticipated middleweight adventure-tourer bikes, the Atlas and Atlas GT, at the TVS manufacturing facility in Hosur, near Bengaluru. This strategic move signifies a major milestone in the brand's revival and its aggressive expansion into the rapidly growing adventure motorcycling segment.
Global Launch of Norton Atlas Bikes
The Atlas range of motorcycles represents the perfect fusion of British design philosophy and Indian engineering precision. While the core design and rigorous engineering were conducted at Norton's headquarters in the UK, the manufacturing process now leverages TVS Motor Company's excellence in high-quality production. These new models are engineered to be versatile, with the Atlas specifically tailored for adventure-touring and light off-road capabilities, while the Atlas GT is optimized primarily for road performance.
According to the company, these motorcycles will officially debut on the global stage next month, with commercial availability anticipated to start later in the third quarter of the year. For the domestic market in India, customers can look forward to the launch of these premium bikes around the festive season, specifically between October and November. K. N. Radhakrishnan, Director and CEO of TVS Motor Company, highlighted that these models bring together the unique strengths of both companies, positioning Norton as a formidable player in the international motorcycle arena.
Performance and Technical Specifications
The Norton Atlas and Atlas GT share a robust platform, although they feature distinct variations in their suspension systems, wheels, and tire configurations to suit their respective riding styles. Both variants are powered by a potent 585-cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine. This sophisticated powertrain incorporates a 270-degree crankshaft, a DOHC eight-valve cylinder head, and advanced ride-by-wire fuel injection technology.
In terms of output, the engine is capable of delivering 69 hp and a peak torque of 57.5 NM. These specifications firmly place the new Norton Atlas range in direct competition with established middleweight performers such as the Yamaha Tracer 7 and the Kawasaki Versys 650. By integrating modern technology with extensive lightweight aluminium components, the manufacturer has focused on enhancing both weight efficiency and overall machine performance, further cementing the brand's commitment to returning to its former glory under new leadership.
