The Mexican government has announced a staggered registration schedule for mobile lines, requiring users to link their phone numbers to their identities. The policy aims to combat crime, with specific deadlines based on the last digit of each phone number to avoid service suspension.

New Staggered Deadlines Announced to Registrar Linea in Mexico for Mobile Users

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Important summary points from this article
  • New staggered registration deadlines for mobile lines are now based on the final phone number digit.
  • Prepaid users must link their names and CURP to their service provider to avoid service suspension.
  • Suspended lines will maintain access to 911 and carrier customer service numbers only.
  • Postpaid mobile users are exempt as their identification is already on file with providers.

Authorities have officially updated the national guidelines for registrar linea, the process of linking mobile phone numbers to individual identity records in Mexico. Following the initial deadline of June 30, 2026, officials have introduced a new staggered registration schedule based on the final digit of each mobile phone number to improve compliance and manage the high volume of users.

The government maintains that this initiative is a crucial step in combating criminal activities such as extortion and fraud. By requiring that all mobile lines be associated with a specific user’s CURP and name, the objective is to eliminate the prevalence of anonymous chips that have historically been exploited by criminal organizations. While the policy has faced public scrutiny regarding data privacy and the security of sensitive personal information, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) has clarified that this data is managed strictly by service providers rather than centralized government databases.

Staggered Registration Schedule for Mobile Lines

To ensure a smooth transition, the CRT has implemented a specific calendar for prepaid users, who are required to complete the registration process to avoid service suspension. Postpaid users, conversely, are largely exempt from this new requirement as their identification data was captured during the initial contract process. For prepaid customers, the deadlines are set as follows: those with a terminal digit of 2 must register by September 15, while subsequent digits follow a rolling schedule through the end of the year, concluding with the digit 9 on December 31, 2026.

Failure to link a mobile line within the designated timeframe will result in a temporary service restriction. During this suspension, affected users will retain limited access, specifically for reaching the 911 emergency service and contacting their carrier’s support centers. Full service will be restored immediately once the user successfully completes the identity verification process with their respective provider.

Experts note that while registrar linea is common practice in over 160 countries, the success of this measure in the national context depends heavily on the robustness of data protection protocols. Concerns regarding previous breaches of public databases remain a significant point of contention among citizens. Moving forward, the effectiveness of this policy in reducing telecommunications-related crime will be closely monitored by security analysts and the public alike. Users are encouraged to finalize their registrations ahead of the specific deadlines to avoid any interruption in their connectivity.
