New ITR Rules 2026: Double Up on Address and Mobile Details

Highlights

  • New ITR rules for FY 2025-26
  • Double address requirement
  • Secondary contact information
  • Simplified representative filing

New Delhi - The government has recently updated the income tax return (ITR) forms to be used for the assessment year (AY) 2026-27, which is particularly significant for those taxpayers who need to report their income from financial year (FY) 2025-26. While adhering strictly to the prescribed formats of ITRs 1 through 7, these changes aim to streamline and clarify the tax filing process.

New Address Requirements Clarify Reporting

The most notable change is in Part A of the form, where taxpayers are now required to provide a primary address as well as an additional secondary address. Previously, only one address sufficed; now two are needed for a more accurate picture of taxpayer residency. Additionally, under the revised system, mobile numbers and email IDs can be listed as both primary and secondary contact information, providing flexibility in communication.

Impact on Representatives: The changes also affect how tax representatives operate. Previously, these individuals had to furnish detailed information regarding their capacity, name, address, Pan/Aadhaar details etc. However, the new system simplifies this process significantly—just three key pieces of data are now required: name, email, and mobile number.

The dual reporting on capital gains has been removed from the forms for AY 2026-27. This is due to changes in tax slabs for the previous fiscal year, implying that further breakdowns are no longer necessary. The elimination of this section means reduced paperwork for both individuals and representatives alike.
