The administration of Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has proactively implemented a comprehensive summer management strategy to ensure the well-being of its animal residents during the peak heatwave. The park now features foggers, cooling pools, and specialized diets designed for each species' unique needs.
Tailored Cooling Measures
Nandankanan has around 169 species with an estimated 4,000 individual animals. To address the intense heat, the park staff customized their approach for every enclosure:- For large carnivores like tigers and lions, shaded areas are provided along with pools filled with water.
- Mist sprays and foggers have been installed in their enclosures to enhance their comfort levels.
Primate and bird care received special attention. For primates, mist sprays and sprinklers augment their standard diet with water-rich fruits. The park ensures ample water availability, particularly for avian residents, by creating several cooling spots in the bird enclosures.
The zoo's commitment to visitor safety also comes into play. Devising strategies to manage visitor traffic and provide cold water, Nandankanan has installed fans and mist foggers in high-traffic areas. This dual approach not only benefits the wildlife but also ensures a comfortable environment for all park visitors.
Nandakankanan's measures take into account the severe heatwave conditions forecast for the region by India Meteorological Department (IMD). While temperatures are expected to remain extremely high, these proactive steps will help mitigate any adverse effects on both animals and visitors in this heatwave-prone area.
The extreme weather has prompted local authorities to issue urgent health advisories. Residents have been urged to avoid outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when temperatures peak.
