Indian authorities have issued severe weather warnings, including heavy rainfall and potential disruptions across multiple states and major cities, highlighting the unpredictability of monsoon season and its significant impact on transportation and local economies.

Monsoon Alert: Severe Weather Expected Across India in Upcoming Days

Highlights

  • Severe weather alerts are in effect for Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Himachal, Uttarakhand, and parts of South India, with heavy rainfall warnings expected over the next three days.
  • Delhi-NCR may experience a spell of rain as weather conditions deteriorate, potentially impacting transportation systems and local communities.
  • Temperature advisories are issued for states like Rajasthan amid warnings of heatwaves due to rising summer temperatures.
  • Snowfall warnings have been issued in high-altitude regions of Himachal and Uttarakhand where light rainfall or severe thunderstorms might transform into snowfall under extreme weather conditions.

Following a sharp rise in temperatures across the country, the weather has unexpectedly turned more humid and cloudy, bringing about increased rainfall possibilities. Since early morning, numerous areas in Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh have experienced hovering clouds accompanied by light drizzle and winds that have led to temperature drops.

With the winter chill intensifying slightly, especially in the Delhi-NCR region, a potential spell of rain is on the horizon due to deteriorating weather conditions. The northeastern states might also see a significant dip in temperatures and potentially interrupted road traffic. Rain forecasts extend from Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, with light to moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms.

These regions have received warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about heavy rainfall over a three-day period starting March 15, threatening adverse conditions in major parts of South India. The IMD has issued temperature advisories for Rajasthan and other states across the country.

The Indian weather scenario features not only rain but also snowfall, with the IMD issuing alerts for both light rain/snowfall and thunderstorms for regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. These areas are particularly vulnerable to sudden changes in temperature due to their topographical characteristics and seasonal variations.
