A courageous minor student in Odisha recently took a decisive step to prevent a forced marriage by reaching out to the national Child Helpline. The young scholar, who resides in a region under the jurisdiction of the Phiringia police station in the Kandhamal district, chose to leave her family home after discovering that her parents were arranging a marriage for her to an adult man against her own aspirations.
This incident highlights the growing awareness and utilization of the Child Helpline (1098) as a vital resource for minors facing exploitation or rights violations. Fearing for her immediate well-being, the student initially sought refuge at the home of a distant aunt located within the Sarangada police station area. However, upon feeling continued insecurity, she took the proactive step of dialling the helpline to seek urgent intervention.
Effective Intervention for Child Protection
Upon receiving the distress call, the Child Helpline authorities acted with significant urgency. They immediately coordinated with local law enforcement to ensure a swift response. A joint team, comprising both Child Helpline members and local police personnel, arrived at the aunt's residence to secure the girl's safety.
Following her rescue, the minor was provided with essential emotional support through structured counselling sessions held in the presence of law enforcement officers. To ensure her long-term protection and welfare, she was subsequently relocated to the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Phulbani, where she remains under official care.
