The Mekedatu row has intensified following a strong demand from former Karnataka Chief Minister and current Haveri MP, Basavaraj Bommai. On June 20, 2026, he explicitly called for the Congress party to withdraw its political support from the Tamil Nadu government. This ultimatum comes as a direct response to the legislative resolution passed by Tamil Nadu against the proposed Mekedatu project.
Political Stance on the Mekedatu Project
On June 19, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly reached a unanimous decision to adopt a resolution opposing the Karnataka government's plans to construct a dam across the Kaveri River at Mekedatu. This project, which has been a point of significant contention between the two southern states, is viewed by local leadership as a vital infrastructure development. The resolution moved by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has effectively signaled strong regional opposition to the proposed construction.
In his statement to the media, Basavaraj Bommai challenged the current Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to take a definitive stand. Given that the Congress party is a key coalition partner in the Tamil Nadu government, Bommai argued that if the neighboring state refuses to revoke its resolution against the project, then the Congress must reconsider its alliance. He emphasized that Shivakumar had previously referred to Mekedatu as the heart of South India, underscoring the perceived importance of this initiative for the region.
Moving Forward with Development
Reflecting on the legal history of the dispute, Bommai noted that the judiciary had previously indicated it would not intervene when Tamil Nadu initially approached the court regarding these concerns. Consequently, he urged the state government to accelerate the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and secure the necessary regulatory approvals without further procrastination.
The former Chief Minister further stated that the interests of Karnataka remain a unified priority that transcends traditional party lines. He affirmed that political factions within the state are standing together on fundamental issues concerning land, water, and linguistic identity. Bommai pledged that his party would provide full support for any legitimate government actions taken to protect the state's interests, highlighting a collective resolve to see the project through to completion despite the ongoing inter-state friction.
