Big news for UPI users! National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a fantastic service that enables you to transfer money without needing an internet connection. This feature is now live on Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, making it accessible even when Wi-Fi or mobile data isn't available. Follow these steps to send money quickly with just your phone's keypad.

The Five-Step Process

Before you start using this service, ensure three things:

  • Your mobile number is linked to the bank account you want to use for transfers.
  • The UPI service is already activated on your mobile number.
  • You have a basic phone with call and SMS capabilities.

When the internet connection fails, or if you're in rural areas where network coverage is weak, these steps will guide you:

Step 1: Dial *99#.

Start by opening your phone's dialer and entering *99#. Ensure this is done from the mobile number connected to your bank account. This service works on majority Indian banks.

Step 2: Choose "Send Money".

A pop-up menu will appear, offering options like 'Send Money', 'Request Money', 'Check Balance', and 'My Profile'. Press the number corresponding to 'Send Money' to proceed.

Step 3: Select How to Send the Money.

The next screen lets you choose how to send funds, whether by UPI ID, mobile number, or bank account number with IFSC code. Pick a method that suits your needs best.

Step 4: Enter Recipient Details and Amount.

Based on the chosen option, type in the recipient's details—mobile number, UPI ID, or bank info, including IFSC if needed—and enter the amount you wish to transfer. Add any notes or remarks, such as rent or food expenses, for clarity.

Step 5: Enter UPI PIN.

In the final step, input your UPI PIN to complete the transaction. Once entered, funds will be processed and transferred immediately. A confirmation alert is sent on both screen and SMS once successful.

Note that telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, Vi may charge a minimal fee for using this service through offline UPI (*99#).

Supporting multiple Indian languages enhances its usability in rural areas. This ensures no matter the language preference, people can access banking easily.
