The ongoing geopolitical turmoil between Iran and the United States has put a strain on global energy markets, causing concern over the availability and cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). However, relief is at hand for many households benefitting from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme. This government program provides LPG cylinders to those who meet certain criteria—essentially, women above 18 years old with no existing LPG connections.

How Does the PMUY Scheme Work?

The PMUY scheme offers a significant discount of Rs 300 on LPG cylinders. This means an average consumer pays less for their gas cylinder than they would otherwise. Women eligible under this program can receive an LPG connection without having to pay a security deposit or installation fees, making it more accessible for low-income families.

The PMUY scheme covers essential domestic equipment such as an LPG cylinder with a 14.2 kg capacity, a safety hose pipe (1.2 meters), and a first refill free of charge. Additionally, beneficiaries are provided with a two-burner stove. Applicants can apply online through the official website at pmuy.gov.in or visit their nearest Customer Service Center (CSC) for assistance.

The application process requires providing basic identification documents like an Aadhaar card, proof of identity (PoI), and a recent photograph. Applicants also need to submit their bank account details along with copies of the passbook or cancelled cheque book as proof of address. For households registered under a ration card, additional family information from adult members may be required.

The scheme has shown its effectiveness in increasing LPG consumption among beneficiaries. Per capita LPG cylinder usage went up from 3.01 cylinders annually in the fiscal year 2019-20 to 4.43 cylinders by 2024-25, indicating a steady rise in adoption and utilization.
