Former Member of Parliament Kesineni Srinivas has officially approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking an urgent investigation into the alleged custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna. The case, which has sparked significant public concern in Vijayawada, involves allegations of severe police brutality and the questionable disposal of the deceased’s remains.
According to the formal complaint filed by Kesineni Srinivas, the victim, Gade Sai Krishna, was initially apprehended by the Krishnalanka police on May 9 while in Markapuram. The individual was taken into custody on allegations of involvement in various criminal cases. However, the legal counsel and family members claim that the detention period extended over 35 days, during which the victim was reportedly held in multiple locations, including the Krishnalanka police station.
Demands for Judicial Inquiry and Accountability
The complaint submitted to the NHRC raises grave allegations regarding the use of "third-degree" torture during the period of incarceration, which supporters and the former MP claim directly resulted in Gade Sai Krishna’s death. Furthermore, the victim’s family has leveled serious accusations against local law enforcement, claiming that officials performed a clandestine cremation of the body and subsequently disposed of the ashes in the Krishna River without proper family authorization or transparency.
In response to these distressing allegations, Kesineni Srinivas has formally requested that the National Human Rights Commission mandate an independent judicial inquiry into the circumstances of the case. The former MP has also specifically demanded the immediate suspension of the Vijayawada Police Commissioner to ensure a fair and impartial investigation can proceed without potential interference from the department involved in the original arrest.
The focus on custodial death cases continues to be a critical issue for civil rights advocates in the region. The legal demand for an NHRC intervention underscores the need for transparency and accountability when individuals die while under state detention. The investigation is expected to examine not only the cause of death but also the procedural lapses involving the illegal detention and the subsequent handling of the remains, which have caused significant emotional distress to the bereaved family of Gade Sai Krishna. Authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive response to these specific allegations as the national body begins its review of the petition.
