Karnataka Fully Reopens Jungle Safari at Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves

The Karnataka government has officially announced the full resumption of jungle safari services within the Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserves. This decision follows a comprehensive review by a technical committee of experts, which assessed the effective carrying capacity of these national parks to ensure that ecotourism operations remain sustainable and safe for both wildlife and visitors.

The state administration has confirmed that it has accepted the technical report and instructed park officials to manage the jungle safari excursions in a strictly regulated manner. This approach aims to align tourism activities with the expert-led recommendations, balancing visitor experiences with the necessity of safeguarding the natural environment and local ecological integrity.

Sustainable Tourism and Wildlife Conservation Efforts

Karnataka has long been recognized for its commitment to an ecotourism model that emphasizes conservation while simultaneously fostering local economic growth. By promoting responsible tourism, the state creates valuable employment and livelihood opportunities for residents living near these protected zones. Officials noted that the objective remains to ensure that any visitor interaction contributes positively to the broader goals of habitat conservation and community development.

The move to fully reopen these safaris comes after a period of adjustment. In May, Karnataka Forest and Environment Minister Ishwar B. Khandre provided clarity regarding the temporary suspension of these operations, which had been in effect since last November. He explained that the decision to pause activities was a critical safety measure initiated following a series of unfortunate wildlife attacks that endangered human lives.

Addressing concerns raised in the Assembly by Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok, who highlighted that the suspension impacted approximately 4,000 jobs, Minister Khandre defended the administration's actions. He noted that the safety of citizens was the primary driver for the temporary shutdown, especially after three lives were tragically lost and others were injured within a brief fifteen-day period last year. Tigers had been observed straying outside of forest boundaries, necessitating an immediate intervention to prevent further casualties.

Enhanced Safety Protocols and Management

To prepare for the full reopening of the jungle safari, significant security enhancements were implemented across the Bandipur and Nagarahole regions. The forest department established twenty-five anti-poaching camps along the 314-kilometer border of the Bandipur reserve, focusing particularly on the 100-kilometer stretch identified as a high-conflict zone. Staff have been deployed to maintain vigilant patrols for up to fourteen hours daily.

Furthermore, a sophisticated, comprehensive command center has been made operational to oversee these efforts. By integrating these preventive measures, the state government believes it has established the necessary groundwork to manage wildlife interactions effectively and resume tourism activities without compromising the safety of local residents or the well-being of the region's protected wildlife populations.
