Jio Evaluates Sovereign Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellation Plans for India
Ahead of its IPO, Jio Platforms is developing a sovereign Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation to expand high-speed connectivity to India's most remote regions, while simultaneously growing its 5G network to over 268 million subscribers.

Highlights
- •Jio is evaluating the development of an indigenous Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation for India.
- •The company is building domestic ground station infrastructure to support both partner and proprietary satellites.
- •Jio's 5G subscriber base has reached over 268 million users, marking significant annual growth.
- •The strategy focuses on bridging the connectivity gap in remote, island, and border regions.
Ahead of its anticipated initial public offering, Jio Platforms is actively exploring the development of a sovereign Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to enhance connectivity across India. As the nation moves toward a new digital frontier, the company aims to bridge the gap in regions currently unreachable by terrestrial networks, such as remote villages, island communities, and border outposts.
Expanding Connectivity with LEO Satellite Technology
During the 49th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited, Akash Ambani, managing director of Jio Platforms, emphasized that the firm is shifting its focus toward space-based communication. While foreign entities currently dominate this sector, Jio intends to establish indigenous capabilities. The strategy involves a dual approach: partnering with established global constellation providers to lease capacity for immediate service deployment while simultaneously investing in a long-term, home-grown Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation.
Beyond the satellite deployment itself, the company is constructing a robust ground station infrastructure within India. This facility is designed to support both partner constellations and future proprietary satellites, creating a comprehensive, end-to-end satellite broadband ecosystem. This initiative is a significant step toward achieving national self-reliance, or Atmanirbharta, in the space sector, effectively placing India on the global map for satellite-based broadband services.
Jio’s Dominance and Future Digital Strategy
Jio continues to maintain its lead in the Indian telecommunications market, boasting a subscriber base of 524 million. The firm’s growth remains aggressive, particularly within the 5G segment. The JioTrue5G network has successfully surpassed 268 million subscribers, a milestone that represents the largest base for any single-country operator outside of China, following a year of substantial expansion with 77 million net additions.
The company views these advancements in satellite and 5G technology as the foundation for the next phase of India's digital evolution. By integrating terrestrial 5G infrastructure with high-altitude satellite connectivity, Jio aims to eliminate remaining connectivity disparities across the country. This holistic strategy is expected to provide scalable, high-speed internet access regardless of geographical constraints, ultimately solidifying the company's position as a primary driver of the nation's digital growth.
