Jangaon District Launches Seed Melas to Boost Agricultural Productivity for Kharif Season

Farmers in the Jangaon district are being encouraged to prioritize the purchase of high-quality inputs during the ongoing Seed Melas. District collector Sandeep Kumar Jha officially launched these events, which are scheduled to run from June 23 through June 30 across all mandals in the region. These initiatives aim to ensure that cultivators have access to certified resources, including various seeds and essential agricultural supplies, in preparation for the upcoming Kharif season.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Rythu Vedika in Narmetta mandal, highlighted the extensive logistical efforts coordinated by the agriculture department to centralize the availability of certified products at competitive prices. Farmers can access a diverse inventory, ranging from paddy and oilseeds to pulses and vegetable seeds, alongside vital inputs like DAP and nano urea.

Ensuring Soil Health and Crop Productivity

During the event, Sandeep Kumar Jha issued specific guidance regarding the importance of selecting only certified agricultural products. He emphasized that avoiding unauthorized dealers is crucial for maintaining harvest standards and protecting the local agrarian economy. Furthermore, the collector advised farmers to request official bills for every purchase, a practice that simplifies the process of resolving any potential disputes related to seed quality in the future.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the scientific management of fertilizers. The collector warned against the excessive application of urea, particularly in regions facing drought-like conditions, as improper usage can severely degrade soil fertility. Instead, he recommended that farmers tailor their crop selection and cultivation methods based on specific soil types, local water availability, and current climatic conditions.

To address the challenges posed by climate change and unpredictable rainfall, the district administration is promoting the adoption of short-duration and drought-tolerant crop varieties. Sandeep Kumar Jha suggested that embracing crop diversification could be instrumental in stabilizing farm incomes. He also instructed local agriculture officials to maintain consistent stock levels of urea in all villages and urged farmers to prioritize the completion of their crop registration processes.

Promoting Sustainable Farming Practices

The Seed Melas serve as a vital platform for disseminating knowledge about modern, efficient farming techniques. By focusing on scientific agricultural methods, the administration aims to help farmers simultaneously boost their overall productivity while successfully minimizing unnecessary cultivation costs. The event also included broader environmental initiatives, as evidenced by the collector planting saplings at the Rythu Vedika premises as part of the Vana Mahotsavam program.

Following the formal event, the collector conducted a site visit to the Women Farmers’ Service Centre to evaluate its operational efficiency and sales performance. Key officials, including district agriculture officer Ambika Soni and sarpanch Sridhar Goud, were present to support the outreach efforts, ensuring that the necessary technical guidance reaches the farming community promptly.
