This major procedural overhaul introduces a critical "Strategic Dialogue" phase, designed to provide greater clarity, transparency, and financial certainty for all participating nations. The decision was formalized during the global body’s 146th Session held in Lausanne.
New Procedures for the 2036 Olympic Host Selection
Under the revised framework, the Future Host Commission, led by chair Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, will oversee a more rigorous selection journey. Interested nations, including India, which submitted its Letter of Intent in 2024 to host the games in Ahmedabad, must navigate these updated stages. Beginning in March 2027, the IOC Executive Board will shortlist candidates from the existing "Continuous Dialogue" pool to enter the "Strategic Dialogue" phase.
During this transitional period, prospective hosts are required to respond to the Future Host Questionnaire and provide essential financial guarantees.
