Indian commuters traveling between Mumbai and Surat soon get a promising relief. The Western Railway is gearing up with significant improvements, including the construction of two new platforms at Surat station. These developments aim to bolster local train services on this route, ensuring a more convenient journey for thousands of daily travelers.
According to sources from the Railway Ministry, pre-planning efforts are underway to accommodate these changes. Existing infrastructure includes the Virar-Surat MEMU train and long-distance travel options which will soon face competition from improved MEMUs, designed to offer more comfort and necessary amenities like toilets. Additionally, the Namo Bharat train is being considered for wider use, featuring both AC and non-AC coaches.
The 12-coach Vande Metro train, with a maximum speed of 130 km/h and space for around 1,150 passengers, is already operational on the Ahmedabad-Bhuj route. Considering its success and efficiency, it's likely that this model will be adapted for Surat-Mumbai travel. Another possibility under consideration is the Vande Metro variant.
Investment in infrastructure runs high with an estimated expense of Rs 1,477 crore for the redevelopment of Surat station. So far, 45% of the project has been completed, and it's anticipated to be fully realized by 2027. Full implementation will only occur after these new platforms are constructed, marking a significant advancement in local train services within the region.
