India Launches Mass Procurement of Induction Stoves: Targeting 500,000 Units
The Indian government is launching a mass procurement program for induction stoves to address rising reliance on LPG due to supply disruptions. This initiative supports the 'Go Electric' campaign under NECP, promoting sustainable alternatives like LED bulbs and electric cooking appliances.

Highlights
- •EESL launches tender for 500,000 induction stoves
- •Responds to rising demand in wake of LPG shortages
- •Part of broader 'Go Electric' campaign
- •Initiative supports NECP and affordable LED bulb supply
Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), the public sector company under the aegis of the government of India, is set to release a new tender for the procurement of 500,000 induction stoves in two phases. This move addresses the growing demand for electric cooking appliances and comes as part of the broader "Go Electric" campaign initiated by the Indian Government.
The ongoing crisis in West Asia has seriously impacted India's supplies of LPG and natural gas, making this initiative particularly critical. EESL recently issued a tender for 100,000 induction stoves to meet increasing consumer demand. Following initial feedback from various state governments and customers, EESL plans to issue another tender once the current vendor's supply is depleted.
EESL initiated the National Electric Cooking Program (NECP) in 2023. The surge in electric stove prices due to LPG shortages caused by disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz has prompted EESL to take measures to stabilize prices and encourage sustainable cooking practices. As part of its NECP, EESL is actively promoting 'electric cooking' through the National Efficient Cooking Programme.
NECP - A Flagship Initiative
Building on the success of government-backed carbon-saving programs like Ujala and Gram Ujala, the NECP aims to provide induction stoves at affordable prices. This initiative is expected to alleviate the burden of costly gas cylinders on the general public while promoting greener cooking options.
The government's "Go Electric" campaign seeks to transition households from traditional fuel sources to more environmentally friendly electric alternatives. Under this campaign, the government currently supplies high-quality 7-watt and 12-watt LED bulbs to rural households at a fraction of the market price (just Rs 10 each).
In line with these efforts, the EESL has announced its intention to issue a tender for over 500,000 induction cookers to meet the increasing demand while ensuring prices remain stable. Through aggressive marketing and pricing strategies, EESL aims to popularize electric cooking and reduce dependence on LPG and other fossil fuels.
