A sophisticated new centre of excellence has been officially established at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), marking a significant step in the advancement of next-generation communication infrastructure. This facility is the result of a strategic partnership with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), which serves as the primary research and development arm of the Union telecommunications department.

The core objective of this collaboration is to drive rapid innovation and foster skill development in the rapidly evolving landscape of advanced communication systems. By leveraging the combined strengths of academic research and industrial deployment, the centre focuses on high-priority domains including 5G Advanced and 6G networks, quantum communications, artificial intelligence, and robust cybersecurity protocols. This initiative mirrors similar successful establishments by C-DoT at prominent institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee.

Advanced Research Initiatives and 6G Technology

The facility is designed to operate as a vital hub for cutting-edge research and the creation of prototypes for future-ready technologies. Key areas of focus include high-capacity multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, integrated sensing, and communication technologies. Furthermore, the centre will prioritize the development of AI-enabled communication networks, as well as secure quantum and post-quantum communication frameworks, ensuring that future telecom solutions remain resilient and indigenous.

This establishment builds upon an already productive relationship between C-DoT and IIT Hyderabad. The two organizations have previously collaborated via WISIG, a specialized start-up incubated at the institute, which is actively engaged in developing disaggregated 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) solutions.

C-DOT Chief Executive Officer Rajkumar Upadhyay emphasized that this centre is essential for building a robust innovation pipeline, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical academic exploration and practical, large-scale deployment. IIT Hyderabad Director Prof. B.S. Murty highlighted that the institute’s deep expertise in communication engineering, wireless systems, and semiconductor technology will play a critical role in supporting the national mandate to develop secure, homegrown telecom solutions. By focusing on emerging technologies like 6G networks, this partnership aims to keep the nation at the forefront of the global telecommunications sector.
