As the nation accelerates its transition toward cleaner energy sources, IIT Hyderabad (IITH) has taken a significant step to bolster the workforce required for the expanding nuclear power sector. By launching a specialized training program, the institution aims to prepare engineers and industry professionals for the growing demands of this critical energy field.
Advanced Training for Nuclear Energy Professionals
The new initiative, titled the Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme (NTOP), is being launched in strategic collaboration with Crimson Energy Experts Pvt. Ltd. (CEEPL). Scheduled to commence on August 3 at the IITH campus, this intensive three-month residential course offers participants a comprehensive overview of modern nuclear power technologies, including plant operations, essential safety protocols, and complex regulatory requirements.
The program is specifically tailored for a diverse range of professionals, including engineers, technical consultants, manufacturing specialists, and personnel from the broader power sector. It is also designed to benefit public sector executives and managers who are overseeing significant energy and infrastructure projects across the country.
During the curriculum, participants will undergo rigorous training in vital areas such as reactor physics, reactor engineering, and thermal hydraulics. The instruction also covers essential topics like radiation shielding, nuclear safety standards, sophisticated instrumentation and control systems, waste management, and quality assurance. Furthermore, the program incorporates modern advancements such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and emergency preparedness strategies, ensuring professionals are equipped for the future of the industry.
Expert Collaboration and Industry Impact
A distinctive strength of the NTOP is the direct involvement of seasoned IITH faculty members working alongside experienced scientists and engineers from prominent national institutions. These include experts associated with the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), and BHAVINI.
IITH director B.S. Murty emphasized that nuclear energy is set to play an increasingly vital role in maintaining India's energy security and facilitating a successful transition to clean energy. He noted that cultivating a highly skilled workforce is essential for the sustained growth of the sector. Similarly, Commodore R.D. Mane, the president of nuclear operations at CEEPL, highlighted that the country’s civil nuclear sector is currently entering a new phase of expansion. This growth necessitates a steady supply of trained professionals who are capable of supporting complex reactor operations, advanced manufacturing, and related technical services.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a joint certification from IITH and CEEPL. Organizers stated that the initiative is designed to serve as a collaborative platform, fostering deeper engagement among researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals dedicated to the advancement of the nuclear energy sector.
