The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Special Court in Nampally, Hyderabad recently ordered a 14-day judicial custody for suspended Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Nayani Bhujanga Rao. This decision followed extensive searches at his residences and relatives' properties, uncovering assets worth ₹5.92 crore.

Search Operation Details

The ACB conducted thorough searches in two of Mr. Bhujanga Rao's residences: one in Sairam Towers in Miyapur and another at Prashanth Nagar in Vanasthalipuram. Simultaneously, 15 locations linked to his relatives and associates across Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Sangareddy districts were also searched.

The findings included movable and immovable assets including documents related to approximately 27 acres of agricultural land in Suryapet and Nalgonda. Additionally, law enforcement seized ₹3.83 lakh in cash, bank balances worth ₹8 lakh, gold ornaments weighing a kilogram, and two vehicles – a Maruti Swift and a Kia Seltos.

The combined market value of the property was estimated to exceed ₹100 crore. Bhujanga Rao's inability to explain the origins of these assets led him to be detained by police.

Rao has been in the limelight for nearly two years now, as he is a key accused in an illegal phone-tapping case. Following a detailed probe into his asset pool, authorities decided on a fresh round of seizure attempts.

Background and Significance

Rao's arrest comes under the scrutiny of the ACB, which has been investigating alleged cases of disproportionate assets in connection with public office. The findings are crucial as they underscore the extent of corruption within law enforcement agencies.

  • The raid at Bhujanga Rao's property is part of a broader crackdown on graft and malpractice by police officials.
  • More than ₹5 crore in cash and assets in his name have been unearthed, hinting at significant financial irregularities.
  • The investigation involving the seizure of luxury vehicles like Maruti Swift and Kia Seltos signals the scale of wealth accumulation through improper means.
  • Bhujanga Rao's residence alone contained evidence worth ₹5.92 crore, highlighting the severity of the allegations against him.
