Hyderabad: On a recent Thursday, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy inaugurated rainwater harvesting pits at KBHB Park in Kukatpally. The move underscores the city's commitment to sustainable water management practices. Kamalnayan Bajaj Colony's residents voluntarily constructed the pits, a model that

Inaugurating 40 defunct borewells and converting them into injection borewells within Kukatpally Circle, Reddy highlighted the significance of rainwater harvesting in enhancing groundwater levels. As part of HMWS&SB's efforts, nearly 24,000 new pits have been constructed across Hyderabad so far this year.

Community Participation Key to Successful Water Conservation

The managing director emphasized that community engagement is pivotal for the success of rainwater harvesting initiatives. He interacted with residents and representatives from colony welfare associations, underscoring their role in water conservation efforts. HMWS&SB aims to create 30,000 such pits citywide and has identified 700 unused borewells for conversion into injection borewells.

The initiative, designed to channel rainwater into underground aquifers, aligns with global strategies to combat groundwater depletion. It's a direct response to growing water requirements in Hyderabad, which faces increasing stress due to urbanization and population growth.
