Hyderabad Issues Downstream Alert As Heavy Rains Impact Major Reservoirs
Following heavy rainfall in Hyderabad, the water board has issued a downstream alert for areas near Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs. Officials are actively monitoring inflow levels and coordinating with local police and municipal departments to ensure flood safety.

Highlights
- •HMWS&SB issued a downstream alert following increased inflows into Himayatsagar reservoir.
- •Engineering officials are monitoring water levels, inflow rates, and turbidity in the twin reservoirs.
- •Coordination efforts between police, revenue, and municipal departments are underway to manage flood risks.
- •The IMD Hyderabad has issued a yellow alert as recent rainfall continues to impact catchment areas.
Following a recent spell of persistent rainfall in Hyderabad, authorities have issued a crucial downstream alert as water levels rise in the region's major reservoirs. The Himayatsagar reservoir has begun receiving significant inflows, while Osmansagar is also expected to see a rise in water volume, prompting proactive measures from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
Managing Flood Risks and Reservoir Safety
On Sunday, it was reported that Himayatsagar was receiving an inflow of approximately 800 cusecs of water. In response to these developments, the HMWS&SB has initiated comprehensive flood management protocols. Officials have begun patrolling the catchment areas and are currently assessing technical requirements for the operation of reservoir gates. This effort involves close inter-departmental coordination to ensure public safety in areas located downstream from the twin reservoirs.
The managing director of the water board, K. Ashok Reddy, conducted an on-site inspection of Himayatsagar. During his visit, he provided clear directives to the engineering staff to maintain constant vigilance over water levels, inflow patterns from the catchment zones, and potential changes in water turbidity levels. The focus remains on both the structural integrity of the dams and the safety of the communities living in lower-lying areas.
Collaboration for Public Safety
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a yellow alert for continued rainfall, escalating the urgency of the situation. To ensure a robust emergency response, representatives from the revenue, police, and municipal departments have been mobilized to prepare for potential flooding scenarios in the downstream regions. These agencies are working in tandem with the water board to streamline communications and evacuation protocols if necessary.
As of the latest monitoring, the water levels remain a critical focus for officials. Osmansagar is currently recorded at 1,784.3 feet against a full capacity of 1,790 feet, holding a volume of 2.493 tmc ft. Meanwhile, Himayatsagar stands at 1,760.6 feet against its capacity of 1,763.5 feet, with a current volume of 2.110 tmc ft. Authorities are continuing to monitor these figures closely as rain activity persists across the catchment areas of Hyderabad.
