Guwahati: In a move to solidify the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expanded his council of ministers by inducting 12 new members. This brings the total strength of his cabinet up to 17 ministers.

The New Appointments include Ashwini Roy Sarkar and Nilima Devi, who made their ministerial debuts alongside experienced leaders like Bimal Borah, Jayanta Malla Baruah, and Ajanta Neog. These appointments reflect a diverse political base within the BJP.

  • New Entrants: Senior Bodo leader Biswajit Daimary, first-time MLA Nilima Devi (president of Assam Pradesh BJP Mahila Morcha), and veteran Ahom leader Sushanta Borgohain are among the new faces.
  • Losses: Veteran BJP leader Chandra Mohan Patowary, senior most MLA in the state assembly, has been dropped from the cabinet.
  • Political Realignment: High-profile Congress defectors remained outside this ministry despite recent shifts to the BJP camp.

The oath of secrecy and office was administered by Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. The expansion reflects the NDA government's commitment to diversifying its support base in Assam, which recently witnessed a third straight term victory with 82 BJP seats, far ahead of Congress' 19.

The Impact of the Expansion: This move not only bolsters Sarma's cabinet but also signals strategic political maneuvers within the state. With a maximum allowed strength of 19 ministers as per Article 164(1A) of India's Constitution, this addition ensures that Assam maintains a robust governance structure.

The induction of Nilima Devi and other new entrants could potentially energize grassroots-level support for the BJP in various regions of Assam. Meanwhile, the absence of key Congress defectors might indicate strategic considerations to preserve party unity and integrity within their ranks.
