Hyderabad: As unseasonal rains batter farmers, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao has called on the government to buy all paddy and other crops from farmers without any conditions or restrictions. Crops being purchased at minimum support prices (MSPs) would ensure farmers don't face further losses amidst worsening weather conditions.
Rao pointed out that farmer distress was exacerbated by procurement delays, which often put farmers in a tough spot when deciding whether to continue investment in planting or risk their harvest. He urged all BRS leaders and workers to step up support for farmers, ensuring they are not only helped but also protected from potential exploitation at purchase centers.
Paddy and Food Security Concerns
The procurement of crops like paddy is crucial during uncertain weather events. Rama Rao maintained that government inaction has left many farmers feeling helpless against economic challenges amid the unseasonal downpour, adding to existing concerns about food security.
"Unseasonal rains have not only brought hardship but also highlighted systemic issues within our procurement mechanisms," Rama Rao stated, calling for a more proactive approach by government entities to support farmers and protect their livelihoods."
This call for unconditional acquisition of crops at MSPs is part of the broader discourse on how governments can better serve agricultural communities in times of natural disaster.
