  • Focus on Regular Supply to Households Amid Potential Supply Disruptions
  • Minister Urges Public not to Panic, Sufficient Stocks Available

Following the geopolitical instability in the Middle East, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced changes to LPG cylinder booking rules in a bid to ensure uninterrupted supply to consumers.

The minister announced a 45-day waiting period for rural areas and a 25-day period for urban areas, marking a significant step in preventing panic buying and hoarding.

Previously, in urban areas, consumers could rebook their cylinders every 15 days, a practice which was creating supply pressure. Minister Sujata Sharma mentioned the government's priority is to provide regular gas supply to households amid potential disruptions, with a focus on domestic users first.

The ministry highlighted India's reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for 60% of its LPG imports and potential supply issues, leading to a slight reduction in industrial and commercial sector LPG use.

In response to public concerns, the government assured the public that sufficient LPG stocks are available and production has been increased.
