Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh—In a significant milestone, government secondary hospitals across Andhra Pradesh have proven their capability to undertake complex medical procedures that would typically require referrals to major teaching hospitals. According to recent data from the Directorate of Secondary Health (DSH), 32 complicated surgeries were successfully completed between January and August this year.

Improved Services Boost Patient Confidence

Doctors in various area hospitals continue to surprise, performing difficult surgical interventions despite limited resources. At Rampachodavaram Area Hospital, doctors managed a total knee replacement surgery, often conducted at higher institutions. Chintapalli Area Hospital took on rectal prolapse and massive fibroid hysterectomy cases, while Rajampet Area Hospital enabled a woman who had earlier undergone a Caesarean section to deliver naturally during her second childbirth.

Remarkably, at Anakapalli District Hospital, doctors reported the natural birth of a 4.8-kg baby over the last year. Narsipatnam Area Hospital also performed an innovative skin transplant surgery, removing and retransplanting 26% of damaged skin from a patient's body. Additionally, life-saving surgeries were conducted at Araku and Tenali District Hospitals for women injured in separate accidents.

Across the board, doctors demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication. For instance, ophthalmologists at Emmiganur Area Hospital successfully completed 511 cataract surgeries over a period of 16 months, significantly improving patients' quality of life locally. Dharmavaram Area Hospital has also introduced advanced laparoscopic surgeries using equipment worth Rs 37 lakh, enabling four minimally invasive procedures in the past ten days.

The DSH commends these hospitals for their improved performance and implementation of national health programs such as ABHA, NQAS, NBSU, SNCU, and NCD services. Dharmavaram Area Hospital is a notable example with its successful introduction of advanced laparoscopic surgeries.

These achievements indicate that government secondary hospitals are increasingly becoming centers for advanced medical care, reducing the burden on major teaching hospitals while bringing quality healthcare closer to patients.
