Public transportation in Ghaziabad is set to undergo a major transformation following the approval to introduce 100 new electric city buses. This initiative, spearheaded by the Urban Development Department, is designed to bolster the city's bus fleet, aiming to provide reliable travel alternatives for daily commuters including professionals, students, and women. By expanding the availability of eco-friendly transport, officials hope to reduce dependence on private vehicles and auto-rickshaws, thereby easing road congestion.
Currently, the city's public transport system is facing significant hurdles. Out of the 50 electric city buses already in operation by the Transport Corporation, 17 are currently grounded due to battery-related technical failures. With a dense population estimated at 3.5 million residents, this shortage has created a substantial service gap. Residents have frequently been compelled to use more expensive or less efficient transit options, such as e-rickshaws and personal automobiles, leading to increased traffic volume on major thoroughfares during peak travel times.
The upcoming deployment of 100 new electric city buses is expected to address these service deficits by providing better connectivity across residential hubs, railway stations, bus terminals, and industrial sectors. This expansion is viewed as a vital step in ensuring that underserved regions gain access to consistent public transit, specifically improving travel safety and reliability for vulnerable commuters.
Expanded Connectivity and Routes for Jewar Airport
In a related development, the Divisional Transport Authority has officially authorized permits for 18 buses to improve transit links to the upcoming Jewar Airport. During a meeting chaired by the Meerut Divisional Commissioner, Bhanu Chandra Goswami, officials finalized routes designed to streamline passenger access to the airport and major regional transit points.
According to Pramod Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Divisional Transport Authority, the permit allocation includes several key corridors. Specifically, four buses have been cleared to run from Rabupura to Botanical Garden, passing through the Yamuna Expressway, Salarpur Underpass, and Pari Chowk. Furthermore, two buses will service the route connecting Botanical Garden to Surajpur, the Collectorate, and Mongli village. Additionally, 12 buses have been approved for direct service between Jewar Airport and Pari Chowk. KN Chaudhary, the regional manager of the Transport Corporation, emphasized that these efforts to modernize the fleet and expand route permits are essential components of a broader strategy to enhance the city's overall traffic infrastructure and provide greater convenience for the public.
