The victims, all members of the same family, were traveling to attend a marriage ceremony in Tirupati when the collision took place.

According to reports from local authorities, the incident was triggered when the driver of a lorry, which was en route from Bangalore to Srikalahasti, suddenly applied the brakes. The driver reportedly panicked after staff at a nearby check post blew a whistle, fearing that his vehicle might be subject to a sudden inspection or frisking.
